Spokane WA

UPDATE: Check out our new 2023 Best Cities to Live in the U.S. list.

#7. Spokane, WA

You don’t have to choose between urban amenities and breathtaking natural beauty with Spokane, the city in eastern Washington that landed the No. 7 spot on our list. Retire here and you’ll have access to an international airport (for visiting the grandkids), 33 private and public golf courses and Broadway shows, among other awesome benefits.

Without question, one of Spokane’s most unique features is the waterfall in the middle of downtown. Spokane Falls and the adjacent 100-acre Riverfront Park are not only breathtakingly beautiful, but they also offer the perfect outdoor venue for yoga, ice skating, festivals (like Pig Out in the Park) and regularly occurring events like Sunday FunDay — hang out here and you’ll be meeting new people in no time.

And though you have to be an alumni to audit classes at Gonzaga University in Spokane, you can still take advantage of the public lectures, performances and other events held at this Jesuit campus.

Spokane also remains relatively affordable, with residents paying an average of $1,200 per month in mortgage costs. You’ll also have your pick of a handful of quality hospitals and rehabilitation centers here, including Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, the second largest hospital in Washington.
