With more than 5,500 available hospital beds, top-flight research and laboratory facilities, and a world-class university teaching facility, the Jackson Metro area has earned a reputation for health care excellence.

The region boasts 18 hospitals, including the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery Veterans Affairs Medical Center, a state psychiatric hospital and an array of private nonprofit and for-profit institutions, including dozens of clinics and urgent care facilities.

It’s hard to overestimate the impact, both medically and financially, of the giant University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson.

Major Impact in Mississippi

According to recent data, UMMC has a $2.9 billion annual economic impact in Mississippi, employs approximately 10,000 people and has an overall budget of about $1.7 billion

“As the state’s sole academic medical center, the University of Mississippi Medical Center provides leadership and expertise across its three-part mission of education, research and health care,” says Patrice Guilfoyle, UMMC communications director. “Its six hospitals and dozens of clinics statewide give Mississippi residents and beyond access to world-class health care.”

It is home to the state’s only organ and bone marrow transplant program, its only Level I trauma center, the only children’s hospital and the only Level IV neonatal intensive care unit in Mississippi.

Its research-based institutes include the Cancer Center and Research Institute, the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research, the MIND Center for Alzheimer’s and dementia research, and the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research. In fiscal year 2021, UMMC brought in a record $123.5 million in outside research funding. At its heart, however, is the care of its community.

“It is the state’s primary safety net hospital, caring for the sickest of the sick and accepting dozens of transfers daily of patients coping with critical or medically complex illnesses or injuries that require the expertise of an academic medical center,” Guilfoyle says.

Covering the Community

Another leading provider of health care in Jackson is Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, which admits more than 20,000 patients annually. Part of the Baptist Memorial Health Care system, the center includes a cancer center, a six-level tower housing the Cardiovascular Center and Baptist for Women. The hospital performs more than 220,000 outpatient procedures annually.

Other leading institutions include the Health Center at Jackson State University, Methodist Rehabilitation Center, Brentwood Behavioral Healthcare of Mississippi, Mississippi Hospital for Restorative Care and Woman’s Hospital at River Oaks.

St. Dominic Health Services Inc., a Catholic health care system, includes a number of subsidiary organizations and programs. Among them are St. Dominic Hospital, the Community Health Clinic, St. Dominic Medical Associates physician network, the School Nurse Program, St. Dominic Health Services Foundation, St. Catherine’s Village and Care-A-Van.
