Reno and Sparks, Nevada: Everything You Need Is Here
With a tight-knit community feel and no shortage of amenities, it’s no wonder Reno, Nevada, is known as the “Biggest Little City in the World,” a title held since 1929. And that moniker is even truer today, as Reno and neighboring Sparks have grown and developed into a thriving region. Ahead, hear from Reno + Sparks Chamber of Commerce members who share how everything they could ever need is right here in the region.
Community Collaboration
Everyday essentials, from supermarkets to spas and even child care options, like All About Kids Learning Center, Imagination Station Learning Center and South Reno KinderCare, are just a short walk, bike ride or drive away.
“It is a rare day if it takes me more than 20 minutes to get somewhere in Reno,” says Angelina Wyss, director of Judy’s Kidz LLC, a long-established child care program that believes in the importance of community. “During camps, we take our kids on field trips to support other businesses in our community and to provide a fun day of activities for our campers. Reno is a small community, and as you build relationships and partnerships with local businesses, they help enhance what your business can offer.”
Wyss names modern steakhouse Land Ocean Restaurant among her favorite businesses to frequent in the region. The region is also home to Brothers Barbecue, Botanero La Favorita, Wild River Grille, Washoe Public House, and Daddy’s Tacos, to name a few.
Feels Like Home
For a delicious cup of coffee with a side of deep community connection, look no further than Lighthouse Coffee, which has locations in Reno and Sparks.
“Our goal as a company is to engage the community and provide common ground for people to share life together, enjoy a good vibe and, of course, get great coffee and treats. Whether it’s for business or pleasure, we have become a favorite place for the people to gather,” says owner Melanie Prinz.
As a resident, Prinz says she appreciates the convenience of having so many shops and services close to home.
In addition to Lighthouse Coffee, residents looking for a cup of joe can also visit Stella Coffee Co. and Dutch Bros Coffee, and for those looking for a stronger evening beverage, Great Basin Brewing Co., Shea’s Tavern, Alturas Bar, Engine 8 Urban Winery, and Final Draught are outstanding options.
Helping Others Prosper
“When Tom and Bonda Young started Great Basin Brewing Co., they were always very involved in the community, from making donations to participating in community events. They always wanted to make sure that their community was supported. This is a very similar philosophy that Local Food Group has,” says Nick Meyer, director of operations for Local Food Group, which purchased the brewing company after the Youngs decided to retire.
“When Local Food Group took over, it was very important to us to maintain the same community involvement that Tom and Bonda had established. Our goal has always been to improve our communities in any way we are able. We love to see cities thriving and people prospering. I feel like this sentiment is echoed by our regular guests.”
Speaking of thriving, residents of Reno and Sparks have access to a wide variety of area businesses, including those that help them achieve their health and wellness needs. Prime examples include fitness companies BFT South Reno, Club Pilates, and Kaia FIT as well as Bloom Med Spa & Wellness, MaZa Salon & Spa, and L’essence Day Spa & Salon.
As an area resident for over 20 years, Meyer notes that resident-run businesses are so abundant throughout the region that he feels they outweigh corporate establishments.
“We have such a huge entrepreneurial community that fulfills everyday needs,” Meyer says.
