Jackson’s ReNew Biomedical Training Academy had both a humble and hectic beginning. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, ReNew Biomedical Services, a medical equipment maintenance and repair service, was moving at breakneck speed.

Trying to keep up with the demand to prepare and service thousands of ventilators for clinical use was a monumental task. Finding skilled technicians in Jackson and West Tennessee to help shoulder the increased load was daunting.

ReNew met the challenge head-on. Jill Taylor, co-owner of ReNew Biomedical Services and the ReNew Biomedical Training Academy, had the idea of opening the academy to train and certify people as biomedical technicians. The vision took wings with help from a Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development grant. As a result, the training center opened in a new, expanded facility representing a $1 million investment in Madison County and 45 new jobs projected by 2025.

“Investing in health care infrastructure is key to Jackson and West Tennessee’s future. Health care technology management is becoming one of the fastest-growing industries,” Taylor says. “The training academy offers a unique opportunity to start a high-paying career, essential skilled profession, right here in Jackson, that will offer a rewarding career.”

Students are taught in small classes, trained with hands-on, workbench experience and prepared to meet the escalating needs of the medical equipment industry, specifically focusing on defibrillators, vital signs monitors, IV pumps, ventilators, automated external defibrillation units and more.

The program is affiliated with the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, and graduates can earn these certifications: Certified Associate in Biomedical Technology (three to six months), IT Fundamentals (three months) and Certified Biomedical Equipment Technologist (two years).

“We believe that the pool of talent in our area is strong, and the growth potential is very exciting,” Taylor says.
