#10. Greenville, SC

There’s no getting around it: Greenville is having a moment. The city’s downtown is a premier destination for dining, shopping and entertainment, but outside of that, Greenville is home to an array of outdoor recreation opportunities thanks to its prime location in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

With a variety of job opportunities and affordable housing options, the South Carolina spot scored especially high in economics and housing. Here you’ll find Furman and Bob Jones Universities, as well as awesome cultural amenities like the Greenville Zoo and the Greenville Drive, a Red Sox affiliate team.

Local Obsession: In a word? Food. Greenville is a major foodie city and there’s something delicious here for everyone. Seriously, the food scene here is so good that there are tours dedicated to the city’s culinary all-stars, including a BBQ Trail, Breakfast Tour and International Coffee Course.

Climate Described in 6 Words or Less: We welcome all four seasons.

Top Industries: Healthcare, education and manufacturing are all major players.

Local Dream Job: Zookeeper at the Greenville Zoo, which is home to Sid, a coatimundi who can rotate his nose 360 degrees!

Quintessential Meal: Southern-style food rules in Greenville and the warm cheddar biscuits at Soby’s can’t be missed.

Favorite Weekend Activity: Explore Greenville’s Historic West End, including a walk on Liberty Bridge and lunch at Passerelle.

After-Work Meetup Spot: Not only does Sip have spectacular views of downtown, the rooftop whiskey and wine bar has killer happy hour deals.

Best Brewery/Local Beer: Birds Fly South can’t be missed. Along with a great beer list, the brewery hosts Cellar Sundays, which allows guests to sample limited supply brews.

Beloved Bookstore: Joe’s Place is the most delightful bookstore this side of the Mississippi — it’s a one-stop shop for new and used books, local art and both a coffee and wine bar.

Free Way to Have Fun: Spend the afternoon on the Swamp Rabbit Trail, a 22-mile multi-use greenway along the Reedy River.

Hidden Gem: Escape downtown and try a tasting at Community Tap. The taproom is kid and dog friendly and is home to a tasting bar, patio seating and a rotation of food trucks.
