This “big town” has a rich and varied music scene. In fact, Lafayette is one of the best places in the world to experience two unique American art forms: Cajun and zydeco music.
Today, the French language, button accordion and fiddle define Cajun music. Songs are written to accompany specific dance steps, either two-steps or waltzes. In contrast, zydeco music was originated by Creoles, with elements of blues, French Creole and Caribbean music. Zydeco also features the accordion, guitar and washboard.

“I was born in Lafayette, grew up out of the state but spent every summer with grandma and pawpaw,” Jordan says. “I ended up coming to college here and played a lot of saxophone in orchestras, church and popular music venues.”
Jordan loves the diversity of Lafayette’s music.
“While it’s dominated by the zydeco and Cajun scene, you can find great singer/songwriter shows and a respectable classical music community, too,” he says. “Do wear comfortable shoes, though, because you’ll undoubtedly be pulled into a two-step at some point during your stay.”

1. Hideaway on Lee in Lafayette
One of Jordan’s first recommendations is an old house in downtown Lafayette, LA, that’s been converted into a restaurant, bar and live music venue.
“Hideaway quickly became a preferred place to play, as the space is designed and built by an accomplished musician,” he says. “You’ll often hear Cajun and zydeco music here, but not exclusively. I’ve enjoyed country, jazz, Latin and indie rock at one time or another. There’s enough space to dance comfortably, the sound is great, and the food and service are top tier.”
2. Blue Moon Saloon in Lafayette
Billing itself as a neighborhood honky-tonk with international appeal, Blue Moon Saloon is a gathering space for people to listen to music, dance, converse and grab a drink. And for those looking for a place to bunk for a night or two, check out the venue’s guesthouse.
“The stage is nestled in the outside covered bar area behind the B&B, and there are cozy areas to listen to whatever is being played that night,” Jordan says. “Whether it’s the weekly Cajun jam or a weekend hip-hop show, there’s always something interesting. During one of the many festivals (such as Mardi Gras, Festival International de Louisiane and Festivals Acadiens et Créoles) this place can really get rocking!”
3. Rock’n’Bowl in Lafayette
A five-minute walk from Blue Moon Saloon in Lafayette, LA, leads to a setting where the live music ranges from zydeco, Cajun and rock to a 1990s and 2000s pop show.
“It’s a big space, and because it’s also a full-service bowling alley, there’s always something to do,” Jordan says.
Plus, the space serves up delicious burgers and flatbreads, meaning there’s always something good to eat, too.
4. Feed & Seed in Lafayette
From the outside, Feed & Seed looks like a rustic warehouse. But step inside this downtown venue, and you are sure to have an experience you won’t soon forget. High-tech lighting and sound systems have transformed this old feed store into a top attraction for music and dancing. Come and experience things like Cajun Jam and “Bass Addiction” as well as zydeco and Cajun dance classes.
5. Whiskey & Vine in Lafayette
Just south of downtown, the vibe at this inviting cocktail lounge is decidedly more relaxed, as it offers nightly live jazz and blues. Its modern interior gives off a French Quarter feel, and its menu consists of items like signature cocktails, roasted garlic and fig flatbread, brie bites and various boards, including charcuterie, cheese and one featuring housemade sausage.
6. O’Darby’s Pub and Grill in Carencro
O’Darby’s in nearby Carencro is a hidden gem that you’ll want to return to time and time again.
“While O’Darby’s may look unassuming from the outside, once you enter, you’ll undoubtedly be surprised by the level of talent we have here,” Jordan says. “The last time I went, there was a one-man band who sang, played accordion and piano. Other times, I’ve gotten leg cramps from dancing so much.”
Jordan also gives the burgers a thumbs up, so make sure to order one before the night is over.
7. Prejean’s in Carencro
Prejean’s has been drawing customers with its delicious menu and zydeco and Cajun music for more than 40 years. Open for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, Prejean’s features chargrilled oysters, crab fingers, gator bites, crawfish étouffée and seafood gumbo. Music is on the schedule every Tuesday evening and Sunday brunch.
8. Cowboys Nightclub in Scott
Northwest of downtown, this concert venue and dance hall shares a parking lot with Cowboys Western, an apparel store with hats, boots and western shirts. Country is big in this part of the region, and while country music is a mainstay at Cowboys Nightclub, it also hosts many zydeco, Cajun and swamp pop acts. Shows occur on Friday and Saturday nights.
