Health care can take on many meanings beyond just hospitals or general practitioners’ offices, and residents in the Fulton-Montgomery Region are fortunate to have many additional services to meet their health and wellness needs. Here are three examples:

Mountain Valley Hospice

What began more than 30 years ago when a group of Fulton County citizens formed a task force to explore the hospice concept today has grown into Mountain Valley Hospice. The patient-centered facility serves residents from not only Fulton but also Montgomery, Hamilton and Saratoga counties.

A seed was planted in 1983, and five years later, Mountain Valley Hospice opened as a place to provide care to persons with life-limiting illnesses. Mountain Valley’s goal is to alleviate symptoms – physical, emotional, spiritual, financial and social – so patients and families can focus on living as comfortably and fully as possible.

Kwiat Eye & Laser Surgery

If it has to do with eyes, Dr. David Kwiat and his staff at Kwiat Eye & Laser Surgery are the ones to see.

From the Mohawk Valley Eye Surgery Center, Dr. Kwiat performs a variety of surgical services including LASIK, cataracts, advanced lenses and plastic surgery for eyes. The office, located on Holland Circle Drive in Amsterdam, also does routine, yet thorough, eye exams. The staff not only determines the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses, but also checks for eye conditions such as glaucoma or lacrimal disease and conducts optic nerve fiber analyses and other procedures.

Family Counseling Center

With a main office in Gloversville and three satellite locations, Family Counseling Center has been providing a variety of mental health and social services in the Fulton-Montgomery Region since it opened as a nonprofit in 1976.

It places a focus on the needs of children and families, and clinic treatment is individually developed. The center’s staff includes a psychiatrist, medical doctor, licensed clinicians, psychiatric nurse practitioners and other professionals.

Satellite clinics have opened in Fort Plain, Johnstown and Gloversville, and the center is also currently seeing children in 24 school sites in Fulton and Montgomery counties.
