Health-Care Centers in McAlester, OK

By John McBryde on June 23, 2014

From an established hospital with roots dating to the late 1800s to a specialty clinic in business since 2007, health care in McAlester is continuously growing and improving. Below are key players in residents' health and wellness:

McAlester Regional Health Center

Though it officially opened in June 1978, McAlester Regional Health Center can trace its heritage back another 83 years.

MRHC was formed with the merger of McAlester’s two existing hospitals in the late 1970s, St. Mary’s Hospital and McAlester General. Its roots – and the community’s as a whole for health care – go back to 1895 with establishment of All Saints Hospital, the first civilian hospital in the Indian Territory.

Today’s MRHC is a 171-bed, not-for-profit health-care facility offering a wide range of medical specialties for residents of McAlester and the southeastern Oklahoma region. It offers many services, including cardiology, family medicine, general surgery, orthopedics and radiology.

McAlester Choctaw Nation Health Clinic

With a staff of 70 at its facility on South George Nigh Expressway, the McAlester Choctaw Nation Health Clinic has been treating patients since July 2007.

The clinic is open to those with a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood, and it provides outpatient health-care services to around 4,300 patients every month. On staff full time are family practice physicians, pediatricians, psychiatrists and others. Additional services include physical therapy, behavioral health counseling, dental hygiene and podiatry two days a week.

Urgent Care

When a nonemergency injury or illness arises, residents of McAlester don't have to go far for quality care and treatment.

McAlester Urgent Care, part of the MRHC facility, has a staff of nurse practitioners to diagnose and treat common illnesses or injuries, including childhood illnesses, infections, and sprains and fractures, among others.

Another option is TwinMed Urgent Care, located on East Wade Watts Avenue in McAlester. It is open every weekday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. except Wednesdays, when it closes at 12:30 p.m., and is open Saturdays from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
