Welcome to “Silicon Prairie,” a nickname given to this tight-knit, business-friendly community that’s known for innovation. From live music to checking out the brewery scene, there’s plenty of fun to be had on weekends in Fargo, ND, too. Affordable living, ample job opportunities, world-class health care and wide-open spaces all add to the quality of life in North Dakota’s most populous state. 

Top Colleges/Universities: North Dakota State University 

Top Industries & Employers: Health care, education and manufacturing, as well as agricultural food processing combine to create a strong and varied economy. Sanford Health, Essentia Health and North Dakota State University are big employers in the region.

Weekend Plans: Explore the outdoor mural scene and pose for a photo at the Nintendo-inspired Mario Wall. For more outdoor art, be on the lookout for painted bison. There are a few dozen of these fiberglass statues roaming the area. On weekend nights, enjoy live music, which usually provides the soundtrack at Fargo’s breweries and many restaurants. 

Favorite Place to Feast: Black Coffee and Waffle Bar, which has a succinct menu with sweet and savory waffles and a build-your-own option.

Beloved Beverage: Craft beer is celebrated in Fargo. Start at Drumconrath Brewing Company, which focuses on Irish beers and holds open-mic nights and hosts live music.

Outdoorsy Activity: Play disc golf at Iwen Park or go skateboarding at the 23,000-square-foot Fargo Skate Park.

Why Your Pet Will Love It, Too: Hikes in nearby M.B. Johnson Park with a trail that runs alongside the Red River.
