#3. Hoboken
Governor Chris Christie – an outspoken Republican and Donald Trump supporter – may come to mind when you think of New Jersey’s political landscape, but he probably doesn’t get a lot of support in Hoboken.
Hoboken: One of the 8 Best Cities for Walking to Work
The city’s residents definitely lean left; in fact, the last time a Republican presidential candidate picked up the majority of the vote in Hudson County, where Hoboken is located, was in 1988, when Ronald Reagan was elected to a second term.
Hoboken is currently represented on a national level by Congressman Albio Sires, a Democrat who has worked to provide residents with equal access to education, economic, housing and transportation opportunities. Hoboken’s mayor, Dawn Zimmer (also a Democrat), is a strong same-sex marriage supporter. Mayor Zimmer, who became the city’s first female mayor in 2009, served as the officiant for Hoboken’s first same-sex marriage in the fall of 2013, and one of her top priorities is helping the community become a national leader in progressive transportation initiatives. In addition, Mayor Zimmer is a member of President Obama’s Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience and the Environmental Protection Agency’s Local Government Advisory Committee.

Chances are you’ve heard of Cake Boss – you know, that docu-reality TV series on TLC that takes place at Carlo’s Bake Shop? That’s in Hoboken. The bakery is a major tourist attraction and adds to the community’s livability (because who doesn’t want delicious treats within easy reach?), which is why we named it one of the 10 Best Foodie Cities in 2013.
